After the cloaking ceremony, the university president stood up and gave some cheery spiel about how over the next four years, medical school students wouldn't even have a time for a relationship with themselves, much less their loved ones, and the sooner we got used to that, the better things would be. You may think I am exagerrating, but no. Those were his exact words. Can you blame a girl for wanting her hard facts softened up with a little bit of sugarcoating?
Obviously, I've known all along that Sam isn't going to be around much over the next half dozen years. But even though I always knew that, I don't think I really understood exactly how it would impact me until school started. The first week of classes has just ended, and last week Sam's schedule was as follows: Leave for school by 5:30 a.m. Come home for dinner at 7 p.m. and play with Riley for an hour or so. Go back to school to study some more then come home at midnight.
The good news is that we seem to have a great ward with lots of people our age and in our same situation, so that should really help. Actually, for all you Rooseveltians out there, Beau and Christy Hancock (Gilbert) are actually in our ward. Random, huh? It was great to go to church that first day and see a familiar face.
Anyway, to wrap up this little ramble, I have no doubt that Sam is going to succeed at this medical school business. I'm so proud of him! And yes, you should all pity him for his mountain of a workload and crazy stress. But people, I'm going to have to insist on just a little bit of pity for me too! And if that pity happens to include a box of some chocolate chip cookies, so much the better.

Way to go Sam! I want to be like you when I grow up someday!
My congratulations...and condolences. It officially begins! Glad to hear you already have some friends there. From the sound of it so far, medical school is brutal, worse than law school. I can somewhat understand what you're about to go through, but John didn't have to keep quite as extreme hours. Good luck to both of you! Here's to hoping the next few years go by very quickly!
CONGRATULATIONS! I know the white coat is a huge step and veriting. :) That's great that there are other people in your situation. Hopefully that'll be a good source of comfort and support. Sounds like the schedule is very tiring. Good luck to your family!! :)
